The Research Department of Internal Medicine Associates of Greenville, P.A., opened in March of 2002. The department’s goal is not only to contribute to medical knowledge and the treatment of life-threatening diseases, but also to help give our patients longer lives and to increase their quality of life. We have focused on research trials that stress patient education as a critical part of managing and preventing disease. It is our philosophy that knowledge of one’s condition can lead to the motivation necessary to achieve positive results through medication and a healthy diet and lifestyle.

We have completed several studies involving diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, depression, and migraine headaches. We are currently participating in several national and multinational trials which are investigating better treatments for diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and cholesterol problems. We have developed an excellent working relationship with study sponsors. They have complimented us on the accuracy of our work, our excellent facility, and the wide range of services available to our patients.

In addition to ongoing studies that are closed to recruitment, we are actively recruiting patients for two very important studies. One is the AIM-HIGH Study which involves patients with known cardiovascular disease whose good cholesterol (HDL) is too low and triglycerides are too high. The goal is to help prove that treatment of these two lipid abnormalities will result in fewer heart attacks, strokes, and death. The other is the ALTITUDE Study which concentrates on diabetic patients with hypertension and renal disease. The purpose of this study is to determine if better outcomes will occur by adding a new FDA approved medication to the current standard of care. Several new studies have been offered to us by Sponsors and are under consideration at this time.
